HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-Building~~ the standard in safety September 30, 2008 Mr. Jerry Lewis USG Corporation 700 North Highway 45 Libertyville, IL 60048 Qur Reference: File RI 1822 Subject: 3 53 Clark Street Project, Chicago, IL Dear Mr. Lewis: Under~rr~ters Tabora#ories This is to confirm our conversations with Mr. Nestor Sanchez relative to the treatment of the vertical joint intersection of 1 and 2 hr shaftwalls constructed per Design No. U415, against masonry or concrete walls with equivalent fire resistance ratings}. The attached illustrations show the details of these wall-to-wall joint systems. The first two illustrations depict the vertical joint at the start of the shaftwalls, utilizing either an E-stud or a J- runner, attached to the masonry or concrete wall. In both situations, the vertical edge of the lead gypsum liner panel is tight against the web of the E-stud or J runner. When the lead edge of the liner panel is friction-fitted in the "C" portion of the E-stud, no additional mechanical attachment is necessary; when a J-runner is used to start the shaftwall, the lead edge of the first liner panel shall bescrew-attached to the 2 in. leg of the J runner with minimum 1-114 in. long Type S screws spaced 12 in. 4C maximum. The single or double layers of gypsum board opposite to the liner panels shall terminate no more than 112 in. from the masonry or concrete wall. That vertical gap shall be treated with USG's SHEETRDCK®Brand Acoustical Sealant ~UL designation Type AS} or SHEETROCK®Acrylic Sealant ~UL designation Type A}, as specified in head-of wall System No. HW-D-0262. At the end of the shaftwall, the end liner panel must be cut 1 in. less than the width of the last stud cavity to be able to swing the liner panel pass the 1 in.leg ofthe J-runner used to terminate the shaftwalls. The 1 in. gap shall be treated with two layers of 518 in. SHEETROCK~ Brand FIREC~DE~ Core Gypsum Panels ~UL designation Type SCX}, or two layers of 518 in. FIBEROCK~ Brand Gypsum Panels (UL designation Type FRX-G}, or two layers of 1 in. SHEETROCK~ Brand Gypsum Liner Panels ~UL designation Type SLR}, wedged tightly against the web of the end J-runner. The strips shall be mechanically attached to the web ofthe J-runner with fasteners spaced 24 in. DC maximum. The single or double layers of gypsum board opposite to the liner panels shall terminate na more than 112 in. from the masonry ar concrete Underwriters Laboratories lnc. 333 Pfingsten Roatl, Northbrook, !L 60062-2096 U5A T:: 841.272.8800 l F:. 847.212.829 l W:: ~l.com File R 11822 September 30, 2008 Page 2 wall. That vertical gap shall be treated with USG's SHEETROCK° Brand Acoustical Sealant (UL designation Type AS) or SHEETROCK~ Brand Acrylic Sealant (UL designation Type A), as specified in head-of-wall System No. HW-D-0262. Based on the the test data developed for the Type A and Type AS sealants in Joint System No. HW-D-0262, as well as in various other joint systems, we have determined that the wall-to-wall joint systems shown in the three attached Illustrations would maintain 1 and 2 hr assembly ratings when installed in 1 and 2 hr rated wall assemblies, respectively, in accordance with the applicable requirements of the Fourth Edition latest revision date June 30, 2005} of the Standard, Pests fog Fire Resistance of BuildingJointSystems, A.~SI/UL 2079, Authorities having jurisdiction shall be consulted in all cases as to the particular requirements covering the installation and use of UL Listed or Classified products, equipment, systems, devices and materials. Any information and documentation involving UL Mark services are provided on behalf of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) or any authorized licensee. We trust the above answers your inquiry.
