INVESTIGATION PROGRESS NOTES:
The project above has not been fully completed. As part of the completion, the following code related matters need to be
addressed:
• 1. IMC 506.3.2.5 - Prior to the use or concealment of any portion of a grease duct system, a leakage test shall be
performed. The permit holder shall be responsible to provide the necessary equipment and perform the grease duct leakage
test. A light test shall be performed to determine that all welded and brazed joints are liquid tight. There was no request
for inspection or record of any inspection and light test being completed prior to covering welded duct work.
Contractor installing exhaust duct is required to contact me to arrange for inspection before duct work wrap is
completed.
• 2. IMC 509/IBC 904.12 - Provide an automatic suppression system for a Type I kitchen exhaust hood. See IBC 904.12 for
recognized suppression systems and installation requirements. The current suppression nozzle locations require the
appliances to be placed forward of the back wall – a barrier preventing the appliances from being located too far
back is required to be installed or nozzles are required to be piped to provide coverage when appliances are pushed
back toward wall.
o Testing of the fire suppression could not be completed and is required to be witnessed when all systems are
completed and properly functioning. Scheduling of this testing will need to be coordinated with all required parties
involved in witnessing this testing and being able to operate any reset the associated systems.

Structural Components Included in Review:
• 3. IMC 506.3.11.2 The grease duct enclosure and firestop system shall be installed in accordance with the listing and the
manufacturer’s instructions. The following items are to be corrected:
• The grease duct wrap is not being secured per listing instructions.
• Multiple manufacture brands are not allowed to be mixed as part of the listing.
• Access panels are required to be properly detailed.
• Grease duct wrap is not installed through roof curb 18 inches above roof as required – see detail:
o
• 4. The UV light filter is not completed.
• 5. The fan and make-up air sequence of operation did not function correctly upon testing of fire alarm system and hood fire
suppression system,
• 6. No Fire alarm strobe lights were functional
• 7. Kitchen exhaust hood requires the “Capture Jet” system to be balanced per the listing and installation instructions. Have
the person that will be performing this balancing test contact me to arrange for witnessing of this balancing test.
• 8. SPS 365.0400/NFPA 54-2015 Sec. 7.2.1 - Provide gas piping that is protected from physical damage. Where passing
through an exterior wall, the piping shall also be protected from corrosion by coating (paint, or similar) or wrapping with
an inert material approved for such applications. The piping shall be sealed around its circumference at the point of the
exterior penetration to prevent the entry of water, insects, and rodents.
o Exterior gas piping to MUA unit is required to be painted. The Gas valve discharge from the interior
regulator vented to the roof requires an insect screen on the end of the discharge fitting per NFPA 54.
• 9. IBC 906/IFC 904.12.5 - Provide portable fire extinguishers within a 30 ft travel distance of commercial type cooking
equipment. Cooking equipment involving vegetable or animal oils and fats shall be protected by a Class K rated portable
extinguisher. Maintenance shall be per NFPA 10. Install required Type K fire extinguisher.
• 10. IBC 906.2.1/IBC 906.2 - Provide fire extinguishers per this code section. Fire extinguishers shall be selected, installed
and maintained in accordance with IFC 906 and NFPA 10. Install fire extinguishers to serve dining and store areas.
• 11. IMC 606 - Provide a duct smoke detection system in new duct systems, with appropriate controls, unless (1) the return
air rate is 2,000 cfm or less (See balancing report SPS 364.0313), OR (2) where all portions of the building served by the
air distribution system are protected by area smoke detectors connected to a fire alarm system in accordance with the
International Fire Code. The smoke detection system shall shut down the air distribution system upon activation. Smoke
detectors shall be connected to a fire alarm system. The activation of a smoke detector shall activate a visible and audible
supervisory signal at a constantly attended location unless exceptions are met. The detectors shall be located in the return
duct. By definition in IMC 202, an air distribution system consists of "...air-handling equipment that circulates air within a
space or spaces and includes systems made up of one or more air -handling units." Multiple systems shall have their return
air added aggregately for any one space wh en determining application of the 2,000 cfm return air criteria. The division of
the store into a separate space now creates separate spaces being served by the existing air handler system and requiring
the installation of a duct detector on the return air of this unit.
• 12. IMC/SPS 364.0313(1) - Every heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system shall be balanced upon installation.
The person or agency responsible for balancing of the ventilating system shall document in writing the amount of outdoor
air being provided and distributed for the building occupants, exhausts, and any other specialty ventilation. The document
shall be retained at the site and shall be made available to the department upon request. Provide a copy of the HVAC
