HomeMy WebLinkAboutITEM VI Low Mow SpringLow Mow May is a voluntary program in Wisconsin that encourages residents to mow their lawns less frequently in May. The goal is to provide food for pollinators like bees in early spring. Mowing your lawn less allows flowering plants to bloom, providing bees and other pollinators with the nectar and pollen that they rely on to feed themselves as well as their offspring. This is the primary benefit, giving flowers a chance to bloom uninterrupted and in greater abundance. How it works • Reduce mowing: Mow less often or only mow parts of your lawn • Raise the mower deck: When you do mow, raise the deck of your mower so flowers can recover faster • Avoid chemicals: Don't use pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides • Plant native plants: Add native plants to your garden to provide more food for pollinators. • Talk to neighbors: Let your neighbors know you're participating and encourage them to join. Benefits • Preserves habitats for pollinators • Provides early-season food for pollinators • Supports a greater diversity of pollinators and other insects Example Cities in Wisconsin • Greenfield - https://www.ci.greenfield.wi.us/1441/Less-Mow-May • Sun Prairie -No Mow May (scroll down and view the resources under is No Mow effective) • Madison • Shorewood • Wisconsin Rapids
