Item Defeated by the Traffic Review Board at their May 8, 2001 Meeting
REQUEST FOR NO PARKING ON THE WEST SIDE OF WISCONSIN STREET FROM
BENT AVENUE TO NEW YORK AVENUE.
This item is a request from a Board member.
The parking on the west side of Wisconsin Street between New York Avenue and Bent Avenue
has been removed to accommodate the higher traffic volumes during the Jackson Street
construction project. It was suggested at a previous meeting that the parking be removed
permanently. This section of Wisconsin Street is 28 feet wide and carries approximately 4,600
vehicles per day. The Comprehensive Plan lists this section of Wisconsin Street as a secondary
arterial street. The local street parking standards are shown below which provides a point of
reference for parking restrictions.

FACTORS FAVORING PARKING RESTRICTIONS
1. Traffic exceeds 1,000 vehicles per day.
2. On-street parking exceeds 50% of available spaces.
3. Significant curves, hills or sight restrictions.
The case can be made that a secondary arterial should have more restrictive parking than a local
street. The narrow width of this section of Wisconsin Street is certainly below the standards for a
secondary arterial. This is a residential area and I would expect some opposition to this request.
The street classification system doesn't consider the type of land use on a street, but defines
streets based on their purpose.
A street width of 28 feet provides one eight (8) foot parking lane and two ten (10) foot traffic
lanes. A width of eleven feet for a traffic lane would be considered a minimum width for
collectors and secondary arterials.
DEFEATED BY TRAFFIC REVIEW BOARD, (1-5).
