HomeMy WebLinkAbout08.11.23 Newsletter TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager DATE: August 11, 2023 RE: Weekly Newsletter 1. FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTS FVTC SUMMER CAMP: CJ Wedell, Captain of Training for the Oshkosh Fire Department (OFD), hosted the FVTC Summer Camp – Basic Fire Camp at Station 14 on July 18th. Students, who ranged in age from 12 to 17 years old, were provided with an introduction to the OFD and a station tour. The students saw equipment on the airport rescue and firefighting (ARFF) trucks, toured aircraft at EAA’s Weeks Hangar on the airport grounds, and had a training drill with Crash Truck 3 and our aircraft training prop at Station 14. Thank you to Captain Wedell for taking the time to show the students around during EAA! 2. EAA AIRVENTURE BREAKS RECORDS IN 2023: This year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh broke multiple records. Organizers say the 70th anniversary aviation event was a success, with approximately 677,000 people attending, breaking the previous record set in 2022 of 650,000 people. In addition, more than 10,000 aircraft arrived at Wittman Regional Airport and other airports in east-central Wisconsin. At Wittman alone, there were 21,883 aircraft operations in the 11- day period from July 20th – 30th, which is an average of approximately 148 takeoffs/landings per hour. The Oshkosh Fire Department was happy to serve you and we look forward to next year! 3. LETTERS SENT TO RESIDENTS REGARDING REPLACEMENT OF PRIVATE-SIDE LEAD WATER LINES: The City has applied for funding from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources through the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program to help reduce the cost to private property owners for lead water service line replacement work in late-2023 and 2024. While we wait to learn if funding will be granted, along with the amount and administration of any funding provided, notices are being sent to property owners adjacent to proposed water main replacement projects, including street reconstruction projects. The purpose of these letters is to inform the property owners of the City’s ordinance regarding replacement of lead water service lines and to encourage property owners to register to have Oshkosh Water Utility perform an inspection of the material type of their water service line at the water meter at no charge. Property owners may also hire a plumber of their choosing to perform the inspection. Residents are encouraged to replace their private-side lead service water lines ahead of construction to facilitate restoration. If you have questions regarding the private-side lead water service lateral replacement program, please contact Assistant Director of Public Works / Utilities General Manager, Steve Gohde. 4. SEWER MAIN AND LATERAL TELEVISING INFORMATIONAL LETTERS SENT: The City has hired Speedy Clean Drain and Sewer to locate and inspect sanitary and storm sewer main line and laterals via closed circuit televising. Informational letters regarding this work for the 2024 Waugoo Avenue reconstruction project have been sent to property owners whose property is adjacent to this project. These letters include information regarding the marking of their sidewalks for the locations of the laterals, the process required if Speedy Clean is unable to determine which lateral to a given property is active, and identification information for Speedy Clean’s vehicles and employees. The property owners were also asked to return the construction access agreements recently mailed to them. If you have any questions about these letters, please contact Engineering Division Manager / City Engineer, Justin Gierach. 5.
