HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.16.23 Newsletter TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager DATE: June 16, 2023 RE: Weekly Newsletter 1. MUSEUM SECOND FLOOR CLOSURES: The Oshkosh Public Museum's second floor will close to the public beginning on June 20 for ongoing construction of the new Waldwic Gallery (opening in 2024). Deinstallation and renovation of the Museum’s second-floor spaces continue on schedule. Museum and City staff are working together to ensure that closures are as brief as possible. The Museum's entire first floor and lower level will remain open to welcome the public during this time. 2. STATEWIDE HELEN FARNSWORTH MEARS STUDENT ART CONTEST: Each year, 7th and 8th grade art students in Wisconsin participate in the Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest. This contest has been generously sponsored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – Wisconsin since 1927 to honor the legacy of Oshkosh sculptor Helen Farnsworth Mears. The first, second, and third place winners from the state level competition will be on display in the Oshkosh Public Museum’s Sunroom beginning July 1. 3. K9 MEMORIAL: The Oshkosh Police Department (OPD) is saddened by the passing of Oshkosh Police K9 Lando on June 3, 2023. K9 Lando became unexpectedly ill and it was discovered that he had an autoimmune disease, Myasthenia Gravis, for which he did not respond to treatments. A memorial service was held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Leach Amphitheater to honor the life and service of Oshkosh Police K9 Lando. German Shepard Lando was born on July 26, 2016, and was acquired by the Oshkosh Police Department in March 2018 from K9 Services located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was assigned to Officer Clinton Fettig (2018-2020) and to Officer Roberto Martinez (2020-present). K9 Lando had a very successful career with OPD where he trained for over 1,437 hours, completed 151.5 certification hours, and conducted 203 deployments. K9 Lando was responsible for suspect tracks, apprehensions, countless drug sniffs, recovering illegal narcotics and assisting with monetary drug seizures. In addition to keeping our City streets safe, K9 Lando could be seen out and about in the community doing demonstrations, presentations and attending fundraising events. We honor the exceptional service K9 Lando provided to the Oshkosh Police Department and to the Oshkosh community during his tenure. Among his many outstanding accomplishments, he will be best known for being a loyal and dedicated protector of his handlers. 4.
