HEATING & COOLING
EQUIPMENT
•Efficient equipment typically consumes 10—30% less fuel, is quieter, and
maintains more consistent temperatures in the home.
•When should you upgrade?
•Your heating and cooling equipment is unreliable, inefficient, or over 15 years old.
•You’ve noticed excessive blower noises, or sporadic pops, bangs, or rattles from
your furnace.
•Your energy bills have gone up.
•Your home is cold and uncomfortable.
•Things to consider:
•Do both your AC and furnace need replacement?
•Do you want to stick with natural gas or switch to a cold climate air source heat
pump?

HEATING & COOLING INCENTIVES
HEATING & COOLING INCENTIVES,
CONTINUED
•Example: Your refrigerator is a heat pump
•Heat pumps can also heat/cool your
home
•There are several types: cold climate (up
to -10°F), air source ducted and ductless,
and geothermal
•By transferring heat rather than
producing new heat, they are 2.5 to 4.5
times more efficient than other heating
and cooling system options.
WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?
•Heat pumps could be a good fit for
you if:
•You have propane or electric resistance
heat.
•You don’t have AC but would like it or
you need to replace your AC unit.
•Both your furnace and AC need
replacing at the same time, and you
value going electric.
•You have solar panels already, so your
electric bills are low.
WHEN DO HEAT PUMPS WORK
WELL?
Potential Tax Credit! According to Rewiring
America, 25C provides households a 30
percent tax credit for heat pumps and heat
pump water heaters, capped at $2,000 per
year.
25C also includes a 30 percent tax credit up to
$600 for an electrical panel upgrade, when in
conjunction with another upgrade covered by
25C (like a heat pump). Source: Weatherization —

WATER HEATING
•Heating water accounts for 18% of home energy use on average –
more than a refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, and dryer
combined.
•Focus on Energy offers incentives for 3 types of water heaters
•ENERGY STAR natural gas storage water heater
•ENERGY STAR tankless “on demand” water heater
•ENERGY STAR Electric heat pump water heater
WATER HEATERS 101
•Natural gas storage tank water heaters
•ENERGY STAR® storage models even use 9% less energy compared to standard natural gas storage water heaters.
•Natural gas tankless water heaters
•It’s important to get the right size, but since these super heat water only as needed they can be up to 34% more efficient.
•Electric heat pump water heater
•Use less than half the energy of standard electric storage water heater and could save a four-person household $330 per year in energy costs. Larger families may save even more!
•Potential Tax Credit! According to Rewiring America, heat pump water heaters are eligible for the same 25C tax credit of 30% capped at $2,000 per year.
BENEFITS OF GOING EFFICIENT
•Using less of it! There are several products on Focus on Energy’s
Online Marketplace to help you save money on water –and the
energy used to heat it.
