HomeMy WebLinkAboutnewsletter TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager DATE: December 9, 2022 RE: Weekly Newsletter 1. OFD WALL OF HONOR: On Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 10:00 AM the City of Oshkosh Fire Department dedicated our new Wall of Honor. The dedication took place at Station 15. The wall honors both past and active members of the department who were/are veterans, some of them dating back to the Civil War. Along with veterans, the wall honors members of the OFD who died in the line of duty, and the 343 firefighters who perished in the 9/11 attacks. Funding for this wall was provided by private individuals and businesses, area veteran groups, and Oshkosh Firefighters Local 316. Retired members of the department along with several veteran groups were on hand for the dedication. 2. MUSEUM WELCOMES STUDENTS: The Arsenal of Democracy: The Oshkosh Public Museum has hosted nearly 500 Oshkosh Area School District middle and high school students to explore Manufacturing Victory from The National WWII Museum. Students benefit from the expertise of OPM’s Curator of Exhibitions, who guides them through the exhibit, focusing on the local Oshkosh section. This local history section draws from the Museum’s collection to highlight our community’s contributions to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s arsenal of democracy, including businesses that earned government contracts for war materials, those that received the Army-Navy “E” for Excellence Award, and more. Students who attend virtual field trips to the exhibit receive Family Field Trip passes, allowing them to visit the Museum for free with their families. Manufacturing Victory: The Arsenal of Democracy tells the inspiring story of the Home Front effort that produced tanks, planes, ships, and guns with staggering speed and unparalleled energy. This surge in productivity not only brought the country out of depression, but also created mighty military forces, supplied the Allies abroad, and opened new doors of opportunity and social change. From The National WWII Museum, New Orleans. National touring sponsor Hewlett- Packard. Local support provided by The JEK Foundation. 3. HOLIDAY FUN AT THE MUSEUM: Gnomes and elves have a habit of hiding around the Museum every Holiday season. Join us through Sunday, January 8, 2023, for our annual Holiday Elf Quest! 4.
