TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council
FROM: Mark Lyons, Planning Services Manager
DATE: November 3, 2022
RE: Approve Street Name Change from Sage Crossing to Sage Crossing Way
BACKGROUND
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is requesting the street name for Sage Crossing be
changed to Sage Crossing Way. The subject street is a 700-foot long local-classed road located
between Mockingbird Way and Wyatt Way, platted by the Fourth Addition to Casey’s Meadow
South Subdivision. The street fronts 17 single-family residential lots, seven of which have been
developed. USPS contacted the Planning Services Division with concerns regarding use of the
word “Crossing”. “Crossing” is used by USPS as a suffix (X-ing.) similar to Drive or Avenue.
This causes problems with USPS’s address and mailing system which assumes “Crossing”
means “X-ing” or “Sage X-ing”, which does not exist. This is causing issues with mail delivery
to the homeowners.
ANALYSIS
USPS recommends adding a suffix to the end of “Sage Crossing” such as Drive or Way to
eliminate the conflict. Staff suggests adding “Way” to the end of Sage Crossing which is used
for several other streets in the area. During review of the Fourth Addition to Casey’s Meadow
South, City and County staff approved the proposed street names for the plat and did not
anticipate issues with the use of “Crossing”. Moving forward, USPS will be included in the plat
review process to prevent cases like this. Property owners adjacent to Sage Crossing were
notified of the proposed street name change and will be responsible for updating their address
with any and all contacts making use of the current street name.
RECOMMENDATION
The Plan Commission recommended approval of the street name change on November 1, 2022.
Please see the attached staff report and meeting minutes for more information.
Respectfully Submitted, Approved:

to change a name of a street once it has been dedicated a name.

Ms. Davey asked why the map says Sage Crossing Drive but the staff report says Sage Crossing
Way.
Mr. Nau said that the map was a technical error.
Mr. Loewenstein asked why “crossing” was left when that seems to be the issue.
Mr. Lyons said the developer wanted to keep the name “Sage Crossing” but understanding the
issue with the USPS system, it was easier to add a suffix so the community could still refer to
themselves as Sage Crossing.

Mr. Perry closed public comments and asked if the applicant wanted to make any closing
