FREE EVENT AT THE OSHKOSH PUBLIC MUSEUM: Join the Oshkosh Public Museum for a free, community celebration of Día de los Muertos celebration on Saturday, October 29th! The fun begins at noon, with a welcome from Mayor Lori Palmeri, followed immediately by music and dance performances from Ballet Folklórico Xanharati. Throughout the afternoon join in the celebration with family crafts, a taco truck, and face painting from Whimbubble Studios! Crafts will include making paper marigolds, decorating masks, and more! Ballet Folklórico Xanharati will perform again at 3 PM at the Museum. At 1:30 PM, doors open downtown at the Time Community Theatre for the Spanish matinee of Disney Pixar’s “Coco.” Families can also catch the free 7 PM showing of “Coco” in English at the Time Community Theatre. Before the event, you are welcome to share in the celebration by submitting a photo of a lost loved one for display on our community ofrenda. The community altar will be accessible to view and visit every day during Museum open hours through November 3. BRICKS & BREWS: Looking for something different to do on a night out with friends? The Library presents Bricks & Brews – a fun evening of LEGO building challenges for adults in the Taproom at Fifth Ward Brewing Company. There will be lots of prizes so everybody wins! Save the date for our next session: Wed., Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Find details about these and other library programs at oshkoshpubliclibrary.org. 3. RUN WITH THE COPS: Oshkosh Police Sergeant Chris Gorte, Officers Tony Flaig, Ryne Scopp, Craig Johannes, Jack Rew, Kate Mann, Community Service Officers and Oshkosh Auxiliary Police were among several local law enforcement agencies participating in the Special Olympics Run With the Cops event on Thursday, October 6, 2022, in Oshkosh. Several citizens and families turned out to support Special Olympics, participating in a unique one-of-a-kind 5K Glow Run/Walk, which even included a special run for kids, the Kids and Cops Donut Eating Contest, and an interactive law enforcement vehicle expo. Officer Mann and members of the 2022 Citizen’s Academy helped cheer on contestants at the finish line. Officer Ryne Scopp ran in full duty gear, taking a first place win again this year! Participants enjoyed an event-filled night of activities during the 2022 Special Olympics Run With the Cops! 4. OPD HAPPENINGS: On Monday, September 19, 2022, the Oshkosh Police Department welcomed the hiring of Chase Pecore, as a new part-time Parking Control Officer.  Chase Pecore is originally from Oshkosh where he graduated from Oshkosh North High School. He is currently attending UW – Oshkosh and intends to transfer to UW – Madison to pursue a degree in Nuclear Engineering. Prior to joining the Oshkosh Police Department Chase worked at Menasha Corporation. On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, during a Police and Fire Commission meeting, the Oshkosh Police Department welcomed two new Police Officers, Daniel Neta and Jonathan Graminske. Congratulations and Welcome to the OPD Team!  Daniel Neta is originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He earned his Automotive Technology Associate Degree from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in 2010. In 2019, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, completing Military Police training in June 2020 and continues to actively serve in a reserve status. In June 2021, Daniel completed the Jail Officer Academy at NWTC. Daniel was hired as an Oshkosh Police Department Cadet and was enrolled in the Fox Valley Technical College Recruit Academy where he completed his Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification on October 7, 2022. Prior to joining the Oshkosh Police Department as a Cadet, Daniel was previously employed as a Correctional Officer with the Brown County Sheriff's Office.  Jonathan Graminske is originally from Nebraska, relocating to Appleton, Wisconsin. He earned his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice in December 2021 from Fox Valley Technical College. Jonathan was hired as an Oshkosh Police Department Cadet and was enrolled in the Fox Valley Technical College Recruit Academy where he completed his Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification on October 7, 2022. Prior to joining the Oshkosh Police Department as a Cadet, Jonathan served as a Community Service Officer with the Appleton Police Department. 5. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK: The City of Oshkosh is conducting a comprehensive community survey! The survey will be available for randomly selected residents and by November 1, all residents will be able to complete the survey by visiting the City’s Polco survey website at www.polco.us/oshkosh. The survey will include questions about quality of life, important characteristics of community, services provided by Oshkosh, and priorities for the future. The survey will be available online in English and Spanish. The National Citizens Survey (NCS) is the only resident survey endorsed by the International City/County Management Association and the National League of Cities. Residents with questions about the survey may contact the City Manager’s Office by phone at (920) 236-5002 or by email at citymgr@ci.oshkosh.wi.us. 6. ATTACHMENT: October OPL Highlights 7. LOOKING AHEAD: Among the meetings I have scheduled for the week of October 24 include the following: On Monday at 7:30 AM I will be meeting with Mayor Palmeri to discuss Tuesday’s agenda. At 10:00 AM I will be meeting with Oshkosh Media staff to prep for the upcoming special City Manager’s Report show on the proposed 2023 Budget; We will tape that show on Thursday at 8:30 AM. On Thursday at 12:30 PM I will be participating in Valley Christian School’s Career Explorations Day. At 5:00 PM I will be attending the joint meeting of the OASD Board and Common Council. At 9:00 AM on Friday I will be attending the Whitburn Center Advisory Board meeting. At 10:30 AM I will be meeting with staff to discuss the light pole replacement policy and options.
