RE: Weekly Newsletter
1. WISDOT UPDATES SCOPE AND SCHEDULE FOR OREGON/JACKSON STREET
BRIDGE: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Bureau of Structures
(BOS) announced an update to the repair scope for the Oregon/Jackson Street Bridge. The
original nine-week repair estimate has been extended to 13 weeks following discovery of
additional damage inside a failed gear box. Repairs are now expected to finish by
September 30, 2022.
The bridge is currently closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic after a bridge inspector
discovered damaged gear teeth in the gearbox on the south leaf span during a routine
inspection May 25, 2022. Regal/Rexnord, the company manufacturing the new gears and
refurbishing the gearbox, recently identified additional damage in the gearbox that
extends the manufacturing process to build the additional parts.
2. MUSEUM SECURES FUNDING FOR FIRST DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS EVENT: The
Oshkosh Public Museum has been awarded funding for this celebration, provided in part
by a grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts
Board. This $4,000 grant will help fund events related to Latinx culture in the Lake
Winnebago region through a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration this
October. Currently, these events include a community altar (ofrenda), traditional
Mexican folk dancers and mariachi, family craft and learning opportunities, and
confirmed free showings of Disney Pixar’s Coco at the Time Community Theatre.
Additional program offerings continue to be discussed and planned in partnership with
area Latino and Hispanic leaders and groups.
This Celebration will help shine a light on Hispanic culture and open doors to a greater
awareness of a rapidly growing population in our region. Save the date for Saturday,
October 29: the main event for this year’s celebration!
3. TEAM POLICING IS IN FULL SWING: The Oshkosh Police Department has been busy
conducting Team Policing activities in the community this summer. You might have seen
officers out with the department's CCOV, enjoying coffee and ice cream with citizens or
talking safety with the kids. These are just some of the fun ways officers have been
connecting with the community:
Fleet Farm Safety Event: Public Affairs/Crime Prevention Officer Kate Mann
teamed up with John Holland from the Oshkosh Fire Department to participate in
Fleet Farm's Safety Event on Saturday, July 9. Officer Mann talked to the kids
about bicycle safety, handed out free bike helmets and books from the REACH-A-
Child program, while OFD talked about water safety to the kids. Thank you to
everyone who stopped by the event!
CCOV Deploys to Michigan Street: Sergeant Chris Romanowicz, along with
Officers Ben Fenhouse and Tom Kopczyk, conducted Team Policing near the
Michigan Street Pavilion and fishing docks on Monday, July 11. Several children
and parents stopped by to tour the CCOV, officers assisted with garbage cleanup
of the area, and citizens came out to meet and chat with the District 4 Officers.
Coffee & Ice Cream Social: Several officers, along with K9 Magic, partnered with
the Oshkosh Fire Department to participate in the Dunkin Donuts/Baskin-Robbins
Coffee & Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, July 13. Adults received free hot or iced
coffee and the kids were given free books from the REACH-A-Child program.
Participation was great and officers enjoyed good coffee and conversation with the
citizens that attended. Thank you to Dunkin Donuts/Baskin-Robbins for hosting
this event!
