Oshkosh, WI 54902 (920) 232-5300 (920) 232-5307 FAX OSHKOSH COMMITTEE ON AGING (COA) MINUTES February 1, 2022 A.) Ms. Richey called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. B.) PRESENT: Judy Richey; Julie Kiefer; Mike Ford; Joanne Murphy Spice; Bryn Ceman; Julie Davids; Julie Maslowski; Cheryl Hentz; Mike Norton EXCUSED: Lindsay Temple; Heidi Basford-Kerkhof ABSENT: STAFF: Jean Wollerman, Senior Services Manager; Bobbie Jo Nagler, Activities Coordinator C.) APPROVAL OF MINUTES: January 4, 2021 minutes approved as written: Ms. Hentz moved to approve the minutes as written; Mrs. Maslowski seconded; ALL IN FAVOR, Motion carried (9) to accept the minutes as written. D.) CITIZEN COMMENTS ON AGENDA ITEMS: a. Mike Rohrkaste, 1417 Mahler Blvd Neenah; Executive Director of Fox Valley Memory Project—Mr. Rohrkaste explained, Fox Valley Memory Project is a 501C3, the office is located at 1800 Appleton Rd, Menasha WI and serve four counties; Calumet, Waupaca, Winnebago and Outagamie. He explained they were in conjunction with the YMCA and library for memory café’s as well as working with Alisa Richetti, Dementia Care Specialist with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). He stated they were a recipient of a one million dollar grant (Administration for Community Living Grant), for the next three years, to add new programs and services for the Fox Valley area. He listed some new programs; Memory Link is an evidence based program that will include two resource navigators that will work with families going through challenges for as long as needed, 1st program to be opened in Wisconsin; Partner with Soar Fox Cities, he stated people with down syndrome are 50% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s as they age into their 40;s and 50’s, these program are to be started sometime in March; starting February 3 Mind Works; 3 hour class at the library, no need for caregivers to be present, there are four locations for this program between Appleton and Menasha. See Julie Davids for information as she is a volunteer for that program. Mrs. Ceman suggested advertising in the ADRC monthly newsletter. E.) PUBLIC COMMENT ONAGENDA ITEMS: None F.) PRESENTATION: a. Michael Ford, City of Oshkosh Council Member-Oshkosh City Government, Boards and Commissions, importance of citizen input; (See attachment A- What’s the Deal with Oshkosh Government) Mr. Ford provided a presentation explaining the City of Oshkosh’s Government. Mr. Norton stated there was a problem with flexibility and pay, the same as the county; Mr. Ford replied that it was a problem across Wisconsin for all local government within the first year of COVID, it is hard to work remotely. G.) OLD BUSINESS: None H.) NEW BUSINESS: a. Discussion of Current Scams-Mrs. Murphy Spice stated the County is no longer calling people with results of COVID test and no one would ask questions, if the caller asks you questions or states they have your results if you provide information, it is a scam. b. Ms. Richey shared information regarding free COVID tests. (See attachment B- Free At Home COVID Tests) Ms. Richey questioned what the steps are once you complete an at home COVID test; Mrs. Murphy Spice responded that the person needs to do nothing but follow current protocol, she stated currently it is 5 days of isolation. She stated if there are any questions always call or view the County Health Department from 8 am-4:30 pm at 920.232.3000; county health department website has where testing sites are located, days and times. She explained the State Department of Health website has free kits along with updated changes, one should get tested five days after being exposed. Mrs. Murphy Spice explained the National Guard is no longer assisting at SunnyView, they are helping with assisted living facilities, Accelerated Labs is the new team assisting at SunnyView and once tested you should receive results in24 hours and they do test under 2 years of age. She explained again, that Winnebago County Health Department will not call or send letters, you will receive a test message or an email, if over 65 years of age you will receive a recorded phone message. Mr. Ford questioned what the hours were at SunnyView; Mrs. Murphy Spice responded for testing 9 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday and “Walk in Wednesday from 1 pm – 6 pm for vaccinations. I.) OTHER BUSINESS: a. Upcoming community events for Older Adults-Mrs. Ceman provided some handouts to members. (See attachment C- Wisconsin’s Family Caregiver Support Programs, Attachment D- Wise Wisconsin, attachment E- Caregivers Teleconnection) Mrs. Wollerman provided “The Current” newsletter to all members and stated the “Mugs for Rugs” program is now located at the north building, with your free mug you can receive a free fill of coffee at one of the supporting locations. Mrs. Kiefer stated Learning in Retirement spring semester started today. She stated there was a variety of virtual and in person classes, price of $50. Ms. Richey congratulated Ms. Hentz’s interview with the Warming Shelter. Ms. Hentz stated there will be a show on dementia/Alzheimer. Mrs. Davids reminded members to contact her if they were interested in volunteering for Mind Works. Mrs. Murphy Spice stated there was a one program coming in May; Stand Up and Move More, meet once a week for four weeks. She explained sitting and not moving is the same as smoking 15 cigarette a day. J.) ADJOURNMENT: Mr. Norton moved to adjourn at 8:55 am, Ms. Hentz seconded, ALL IN FAVOR, Motion carried to adjourn at 8:55 am.
