MEMO TO THE MUSEUM BOARD
February 10, 2022
To the Board,
In our final week of White Christmas: The Exhibition, I would like to give a formal thanks to the
Museum staff, Community First Credit Union, and to The Rosemary Clooney House.
Arriving at the Museum to such a wonderful exhibit was a fantastic way to start, and the
public reception has been incredible. After a very heavy couple of years, I think an exhibit
like this helped lighten people’s spirits. We will report out on final numbers after
deinstallation and reviewing all of our ticket sales.
I’ve been reviewing our education records to understand the areas where we have the most
opportunities to grow and expand our targeted programming. To provide some brief
background- education programs at museums use curriculum standards and exhibit content
to create programming to support classroom learning and facilitate field trips that extend
abstract ideas into literal terms. These programs also help students who have differing
abilities or styles of learning. The Museum has not had a structured education program for
about 19 years. Prior to that, one full-time staff member facilitated the education program.
Because of budgetary cuts, that position was downsized.
I looked at documentation from February of 2002 to compare how many local students the
Museum had served. 20 years ago, the museum served 1340 students. This month, we are
currently projected to serve only 21. That number spotlights the importance of a strong
educational program, and the Museum is taking steps to rebuild. We are working to lay the
groundwork for a strong relationship with Oshkosh Area Schools to increase our capacity.
A survey was recently sent out to 800 Oshkosh area teachers to get feedback on awareness
about resources we provide and perceived barriers to coming to the Museum. As board
members, I ask that as you share and support our mission within our community, that you
continue to promote the Museum as a wonderful destination for learning.
We’re also exploring ways to connect with the community with other programming. Our
upcoming enrichment schedule is coming together, including virtual and in-person
programs. Please see our website for more details as more events are added.
Many thanks for all you do,
Sarah Phillips
Museum Director
