HomeMy WebLinkAboutnewsletter TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager DATE: January 21, 2022 RE: Weekly Newsletter 1. STATE OF THE CITY PRESENTATION SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT: The annual State of the City presentation highlights what’s new in Oshkosh and what’s ahead, in addition to awards presentations and more. This year’s program will be a “virtual” event, with the video program being released on March 14th at 6:00 p.m. via the Oshkosh Media YouTube channel. It will also be simulcast on Oshkosh Media Gov TV, www.OshkoshMedia.org, and streaming devices (Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV). Oshkosh Media staff are actively seeking public comments to be included in the program through an online survey. The Polco survey can be accessed through a link in “Hot Topics” on the city’s website, www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us, as well as through city social media. Survey participants will be asked to comment on what they feel is being done well in the city as well as what areas need improvement, so these topics can be covered in the presentation. Participants are also encouraged to submit a comment or question in the form of a video. Instructions for video submissions are included at the end of the survey. Mark your calendars for State of the City on March 14th with the video premiere at 6:00 p.m. We’re looking forward to an informative and engaging presentation. 2. REMINDER - PUBLIC INPUT ON 2022 HOUSING STUDY COMMENCES: In April 2021, the City of Oshkosh contracted with RDG Consulting and Design to conduct a city wide housing study. The results of this Housing Study will help elected officials, City staff, stakeholders, and community members discern the local housing market, and gain an understanding of key housing issues and how they impact the City of Oshkosh. The study will also serve as a platform for strategy and policy decisions. The report is intended to offer a basis for formulating specific housing priorities, policy options, intervention strategies, and allocation of resources. Staff and the consultants identified stakeholders to participate in listening sessions and serve on the Technical Stakeholder Team. The team has met periodically during the planning process. An open house for the public was held on January 17th. There is a project website set up that provides updates on the plan: https://rdgusa.com/sites/oshkosh/. If you have any questions, contact Mark Lyons, Planning Services Manager at (920) 2360-5059 or by email at mlyons@ci.oshkosh.wi.us 3. OPEN HOUSE AT THE SENIORS CENTER’S FOX FITNESS CENTER: What’s your strategy to stay fit as you age? The Oshkosh Seniors Center (OSC) continues to offer innovative programs to the Oshkosh community. Oshkosh has one of the best Senior Community Centers in the state, and the facility is here to help people over the age of 50 stay active, social, and informed. On Thursday, January 27, the OSC is partnering with Network Health to offer a Fox Fitness Center Open House at the OSC from Noon to 3 pm so anyone interested can come to check out the state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The afternoon will include equipment demonstrations, door prizes, healthy snacks, and staff will be ready to answer questions from visitors. Most people plan for their retirement from a financial perspective but are they planning and strategizing on maintaining their physical health? That is where the Center can help. Because after 50 years of age, people start to lose muscle mass, they need to be building strength, working on endurance, flexibility, and balance to age well. There are many options for fitness, but we believe the Center, where you are among peers, is the best and safest place for older adults. Getting started begins with OSC’s Fitness Coordinator, Alec Jensen, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Human Performance, and holds over 20 fitness certifications. It does not matter what age or fitness level you find yourself in. The Center has classes and fitness equipment to help you improve your health and feel better about yourself. Residents are encouraged to develop a strategy to age well that includes a visit to the Oshkosh Seniors Center, located at 234 N. Campbell Road, (920) 232-5300. For more information about the Open House, contact Jean Wollerman, Senior Services Manager at (920) 236-5302 or email Jwollerman@ci.oshkosh.wi.us. 4.
