Irving Historic Plaque ApplicationApplication for Historic Landmark Designation - Revised October 2020 1 Application for Historic Plaque Program There is no fee to apply to the Historic Plaque Program. Should an application be approved by the Oshkosh Landmarks Commission, an official bronze plaque may be purchased by the applicant for $250 to display on his or her property. The cost covers the production of the plaque. Historic Details At least one qualifier below must be met in order to be eligible for an historic plaque. Which of the following criterion applies to this application: ❏ Cultural significance to the city, state or nation ❏ Prominent example of architectural style ❏ Prime example of work by a master builder, designer, or architect ❏ Site of a significant city, state, or national event ❏ Dwelling place of an historically significant person 4. Property Images/Photographs Applicants must submit images/photographs of: ●The front of the property from the street/right-of-way ●Both sides of the property from any distance ●The back of the property from any distance ●Historic images/photographs of the property (if possible) Application for Historic Landmark Designation - Revised October 2020 4 5. Written History of the Property Please provide a written background of the property. Be thorough! This is your opportunity to make your case for the historic plaque program. Include context of the property as it relates to the development of the community, information on previous owners & tenants, information relevant to important people or events, background of architectural style or builders, and any relationship to other properties of similar architectural style or existing historic designation. The Oshkosh Public Library and Oshkosh Public Museum are terrific local resources for historic information on properties, and may be of help framing a context for your narrative. The Wisconsin Historical Society website https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Records/Article/CS15323 is also a helpful resource. You may use the following page if you need more room for the written history. Application for Historic Landmark Designation - Revised October 2020 6 INFORMATION x The oval bronze plaques are 10” long by 7” high. x They will have the construction date prominently displayed in the center, stating either “Built” or “Circa” in the second line. x Each applicant will be able to customize the wording at the top of the plaque as long as the maximum letter/space count is not exceeded (approximately 20 characters including spaces). x The bottom of the plaque will read “Oshkosh Landmarks Commission”. x Suggested information is a name associated with the history of the residence or business, the original owner’s profession, or name of the original business. x Only verifiable historic facts will be allowed. x City Staff will assist in the final wording and layout for the plaque. I understand that submission of this application does not guarantee approval of a plaque. Only upon an application receiving Landmarks Commission review and approval at a Commission meeting will an applicant receive approval for a Landmarks plaque.
