Oshkosh, WI 54902 (920) 232-5300 (920) 232-5307 FAX OSHKOSH COMMITTEE ON AGING (COA) MINUTES August 3, 2021 A.) Ms. Richey called the meeting to order at 8:02 a.m. B.) PRESENT: Heidi Basford-Kerkhof; Julie Davids; Bryn Ceman; Julie Maslowski; Judy Richey; Julie Kiefer; Lindsay Temple EXCUSED: Cheryl Hentz ABSENT: Mike Ford STAFF: Jean Wollerman, Senior Services Manager; Bobbie Luft, Activities Coordinator C.) APPROVAL OF MINUTES: July 6, 2021 minutes approved as written: Mrs. Maslowski moved to approve the minutes as written; Mrs. Ceman seconded; ALL IN FAVOR, Motion carried (7) to accept the minutes as written. D.) CITIZEN COMMENTS ON AGENDA ITEMS: Bree Goodearle; Executive Director of Omro Area Communities Center (OACC), will be a future speaker. Ms. Richey requested Ms. Goodearle to provide a little of what she will present in the future. Ms. Goodearle explained there a great collaboration between Winnebago County and the Omro Area Community Center and she would like to present the activities and services that OACC can provide. Ms. Richey stated there had been wonderful engagement in the Omro community and asked Ms. Goodearle to share. She explained how the community came together after a recent storm; an elderly person had yard damage and approximately 25 people came together to help; the Friday prior a man completed a pole building and Wednesday it was leveled; the community came together to rebuild along with businesses that donated material; the residents have been working to help the City Workers by taking of their branches and trees to the land fill. Ms. Goodearle stated that a local tree company came in to help at no cost. E.) PUBLIC COMMENT ONAGENDA ITEMS: None F.) PRESENTATION: John Nieman, Executive Director, Father Carr’s Place 2B-CANCELLED G.) OLD BUSINESS: Bryn Ceman/Jean Wollerman, update on Age Friendly Community, Mrs. Ceman stated they would be meeting soon, the last meeting was stifling with an overload of information. She provided history for those that didn’t know what the group did; they are a small group of volunteers that are working on identifying ways to improve the community. She stated they are using the recent AARP survey that was completed and over 340 surveys were received. She explained she is not only using this information for bench marks of achievement for this group but for an Age Friendly Plan, each county receives Older American Act funding for older adult programing. The plan is re-done every three years to make sure it was still meeting the needs of the community. She stated the Age Friendly Plan goals were to reduce isolation, inclusivity, diversity and health promotions class, and is a partnership with Advocap. H.) NEW BUSINESS: a. Discussion of adding ad-hoc members as suggested by the Mayor-Mrs. Basford- Kerkhof stated the meeting with the Mayor was a lot to process as there were several people from different boards with a great diversity of individuals. She stated it was a good meeting with several great people that volunteer to serve the citizens of the City. Ms. Richey stated some boards and committees are at full capacity and have people that would be an asset to work groups with their knowledge, so the Mayor suggested to add ad-hoc members, not appointed by the Mayor, may not live in the City but have something to offer to the committee. Mrs. Wollerman questioned the number of ad- hoc members; Ms. Richey replied there was no number determined, but it would be manageable, two to six possibly. Mrs. Maslowski questioned if they would be required to attend the meetings; Ms. Richey replied they may not even have to attend, as they would be providing information and support to the committee. Mrs. Keifer motioned to accept ad-hoc members to the Committee on Aging; Mrs. Maslowski seconded; ALL IN FAVOR; Motion carried. b. Senior Expo/October Meeting- Ms. Richey explained the October meeting may be difficult for a quorum due to the Senior Expo being held on the same day and many of the members assist with that. Mrs. Basford-Kerkhof questioned if there will be a COVID shot clinic at the event; Mrs. Ceman replied The Winnebago County Health Department would be there, although she was not sure on the logistics of what they would be doing. Ms. Richey stated they generally have a fall flu shot. Mrs. Keifer motioned to cancel the October 5, 2021 Meeting; Mrs. Maslowski seconded; ALL IN FAVOR; Motion carried. c. Mrs. Basford-Kerkhof reminded the committee that there was still a need for two alternate committee members. Ms. Richey explained we have a full committee of nine members, with a need of two alternates. She stated the alternates would participate at meetings and vote when a regular board member is absent. I.) OTHER BUSINESS: a. Mrs. Ceman passed the ADRC newsletter to all members. She stated it had been a year since the newsletter started. She announced a benefit to end Alzheimer’s walk that would be coming up in September. She stated the newsletter was sent electronically too many people, businesses and organizations. Mrs. Ceman shared information regarding the 10 digit dialing code, which would happen October 24, 2021. She explained if dialing a phone number after that date without the correct area code you will not be able to connect. (See Attachment A- FCC to require 10-digit dialing code for Wisconsin residents) Mrs. Ceman shared that her last day with the ADRC would be August 27th, she will continue to be a member of the Committee on Aging. Mrs. Ceman shared news of starting a child care program in long-term care residential facilities. (See Attachment B-Starting a Child Care Program in a Long-Term Care Residential Facility) b. Mrs. Wollerman passed out the Oshkosh Seniors Center monthly newsletter, Food Truck Friday (FTF) would be August 20th, drawing for the Grocery raffle ticket will be held at 7 pm at the FTF. She stated in the September newsletter there would be a walk on September 11th, call Senior Soles. She stated both events are fund raisers with their Friends Group. Mrs. Keifer stated Learning in Retirement Program was starting again and they are trying to meet in person. Mrs. Maslowski announced Bella Vista would be having a Luau August 19 from 1- 3:30 pm and participants from the Oshkosh Seniors Center ukulele program would be performing. Mrs. Temple stated Edenbrook just went through a large renovation for their therapy and rehab gym. She stated anyone interested in touring the facility can call the main number and schedule a tour. Mrs. Davids announced the annual picnic for Home Care Assistance would be held on August 24th at 4pm at the Oshkosh location. Mrs. Basford-Kerkhof with Guardians of Tomorrow, corporate guardian that services northeastern Wisconsin. She urged everyone that has concern for anyone that may be dealing with financial exportation or squatting to please report it; contact the ADRC, adult protective services. Ms. Richey congratulated Chief Mike Stanley for receiving the 2020 Fire Chief of the Year award and the Oshkosh Fire Department for receiving the 2020 Safety Section Award. She stated the new training facility is great. J.) ADJOURNMENT: Mrs. Maslowski moved to adjourn at 8:33 am, Mrs. Kiefer seconded, ALL IN FAVOR, Motion carried to adjourn at 8:33 am.
