In an effort to ensure that families, citizens and visitors had a safe and enjoyable July 4th holiday, Oshkosh Police Officers conducted special details beginning at 8 p.m. in the neighborhoods around Menominee Park. Officers could be seen on foot, UTVs and squads, focusing on fireworks, parking, and alcohol violations. Community Service Officers monitored the traffic signals at Bowen/Merritt and Bowen/Irving, keeping traffic flowing freely. The special details reported no issues, including parking! In addition to the special details, citizens also utilized the department’s Relay App beginning on July 2 to report incidents leading up to the 4th of July festivities. Although the incidents were not all holiday related, Relay saw an increase in accounts created as well as incidents reported. Overall, the Oshkosh July 4th fireworks celebration was a success! The community safely enjoyed the return of the Independence Day festivities with fireworks sponsored by Festival Foods and several food trucks serving a variety of specialty foods. 3. SUMMER FUN BASKET CONTEST: Last year’s summer fun contest held on Facebook by Public Affairs/Crime Prevention Officer Kate Mann was such a success that she decided to hold one this year as well! This year’s Summer Fun Basket Contest contained baskets filled with toys, books, activities, Bowling Bonanza packages, s’mores kits, and much more. Beginning on July 5 at 11:30 a.m., the first 50 families to send Officer Mann a Facebook message were entered in the contest where 20 lucky families were randomly selected to win a basket! The contest was a fun way for the Oshkosh Police Department to reach out and build positive relationships with our community. We want to express our sincere appreciation to Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev’s Bowl, Bar & Grill, Pick ‘n Save, and all the donors who helped make this contest possible! 4. INSPECTION SERVICES DIVISION REPORT: The Inspection Services Division reported an increase of new housing construction across all categories during the first half of 2021 compared with the same period a year earlier. The uptick in the number of single-family homes is attributed to the 24 permits issued for Evergreen’s Linden Oaks pocket neighborhood off West 9th Street and Linden Oaks Drive. The substantive increase in new apartment units is attributed to the $13.5 million, 172-unit development by S.C. Swiderski on State Road 91 near the city’s Southwest Industrial Park. If you have any questions on building permits issued this year, please contact Chief Building Official John Zarate. 5. DEPARTMENT RELATED LINKS: a.
