(WAAN) Wisconsin Aging Advocacy Network’s Position:
Unpaid family caregivers allow loved ones to remain in their home, which
reduces the cost of providing care to the State of Wisconsin. Today, there
are 578,000 Wisconsinites who are unpaid, family caregivers providing
approximately $7 billion in unpaid care. Just for Alzheimer’s and dementia,
200,000 family caregivers in Wisconsin provide 204 million unpaid hours at
a value of $3.4 billion. As our population continues to age, now more than
ever, we need to support Wisconsin’s family caregivers.
Caregiver Tax Credit:
• Creates a $500 caregiver tax credit for unpaid family caregivers
Alzheimer’s Family and Caregiver Support Program (AFCSP):
• Provides for a $500,000 annual increase in funding for the AFCSP,
and an increase in the maximum household income allowed to qualify
from $48,000 to $55,000.
Wisconsin Family Medical Leave Act (WFMLA) Expansion:
• Current WMFLA covers only acute medical conditions. This makes the
benefit available to caregivers caring for someone with a chronic
condition including grandparents, grandchildren, and siblings.
