1. WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT AWARDED SAFETY AWARD FROM CSWEA:
The City of Oshkosh’s Wastewater Treatment Plant has been awarded the 2021 George W.
Burke Jr. Facility Safety Award by the Central States Water Environment Association
(CSWEA). The CSWEA is a member association of the Water Environment Association, an
international association of members committed to protecting the water environment.
This award is given annually by CSWEA to a municipal or industrial wastewater treatment
facility in recognition of an active and effective safety program. The recognition is based on
the documented and illustrated safety program and safety record of the facility for the
preceding calendar year. This award recognizes the continuing efforts of plant staff who
practice safety first and, with management support, work safely in a field where hazardous
conditions are routinely encountered. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant
Director of Public Works / Utilities General Manager, Steve Gohde. Please join me in
congratulating the Wastewater Treatment Plant staff for their outstanding work.
2. 43 E 7TH AVE UPDATE: The Redevelopment Authority (RDA) invited developers to submit
proposals for the redevelopment of the property held by the RDA on the east side of South
Main, roughly bounded by the Fox River, CN railroad tracks, and E. 9th Ave. The proposals
were due on April 16th and five developers made proposals to the RDA. A few years ago,
the RDA issued a similar Request for Proposal without some parcels included, and the RDA
received no proposals. Since that time, the City and RDA have acquired the final parcels and
completed demolition of the blighted buildings in 2020. Staff has started the review of the
five proposals for the RDA’s consideration at their next meeting on May 19, 2021. Please
contact Community Development Director Allen Davis with any questions.
3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – OSHKOSH PUBLIC MUSEUM: The upcoming exhibit Titanic:
The Wisconsin Connection will be open July 21 through October 13, 2021, and we need you!
Does the story of Titanic interest you? Do you have time in your schedule and enjoy giving
back? Would you consider volunteering on a weekend? We would love to add you to our
team for this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit. To apply, visit the Museum website at:
http://www.oshkoshmuseum.org/oshkoshpublicmuseum/.
4. ZOO OPENING SOON: It has been a very long winter and we are excited to announce the
opening of the Menominee Park Zoo! Opening day for Menominee Park Zoo is May 1, 2021
and we hope you include visiting the new eagle exhibit on your list of places to see this
summer. The zoo will be open daily from 9am-7pm. When you visit the zoo you will also
be able to see our new pack of wolf pups that aren’t even a year old yet. It is sure to be a very
exciting year at the Menominee Park Zoo.
If you are interested in learning more about the animals and birds found at the zoo, or how
to make a donation to Menominee Park Zoo, please visit the Oshkosh Zoological Society’s
website, www.oshkoshzoo.org. Find information about Menominee Park Zoo at
www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/Parks/. You can also call the Oshkosh Parks Department to get more
information (920) 236-5080.
5. TREE CITY 40 YEARS AND COUNTING: The National Arbor Day Foundation has
recognized the City of Oshkosh for 40 consecutive years of attaining the Tree City USA
designation. The Landscape Operations Division will be planting trees in recognition of
Arbor Day at several locations this year in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-
Oshkosh Earth Month celebration and their Tree Campus USA award. If you would like to
learn more about how you can celebrate Arbor Day, contact Bill Sturm, Landscape
Operations Manager at (920) 236-5080.
6. MAMA MIA THAT’S A SPICY MEATBALL: The Oshkosh Seniors Center served up
spaghetti, salad, and (donated) Olive Garden breadsticks to over 60 participants that drove
up to the Center to pick up their affordable meal. There were rave reviews on the lunch but
ultimately it’s a chance to say hello to familiar faces. Many people in our community have
received their vaccinations but some remain cautious about jumping back into large event
settings. That’s why the program staff at the Center continues to offer social activities that
allow opportunities to interact from a distance. The Center can’t wait until the weather is
warmer. In May we will be grilling and chilling next to the Fox River. People can purchase
their individual lunch, bring a lawn chair, and eat riverside. Warm sunny days are going
help spread sunshine in the lives of the Oshkosh Seniors Center participants. The Oshkosh
Seniors Center enriches the lives of thousands of older adults from our community. If you
are interested in finding more information about the Center please call Jean Wollerman,
Senior Services Manager at 920-232-5300. The Center’s program newsletter may be found on
our webpage. https://www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/SeniorServices/
