I ran for Congress earlier this year with sustainability and the environment as the driving force and inspiration to make a real difference in our community. I continually said that I believe the greatest opportunity to make a difference for our community, and across the country, was at the federal level with the local level being a very close second. I know that my next step to make an impact is to serve locally on the Sustainability Advisory Board. Oshkosh is in a unique position geographically, economically, and geologically to provide real tangible improvements to our environment and how the city functions day to day. With Oshkosh being nested between the Fox River and Lake Winnebago, many major events each year, large corporations calling the city home, and a top class university, there are ample opportunities to utilize all of these aspects to increase sustainability. In my free time when I am not working my day job in IT, I am staying up to date on climate news and innovations as I am always fascinated at the possibilities we have to become more environmentally safe while increasing energy efficiency. Sustainability and the environment is my passion and my desire to strive for better while serving my community is why I believe I would be a great fit on the board. I would be honored to be considered and be given the opportunity to serve. Please write a concise statement which describes why you wish to serve on the above Board/Commission. I think Oshkosh is in a great position to lead on sustainability initiatives. We should increase collaboration with UW Oshkosh, utilize the natural water ways, and implement policy that takes advantage of many unique aspects such as the airport and major events attracting people from out of town. What I liked in the 2019 Sustainability Plan is the focus on air quality, trying to make Oshkosh a green business incubator, and a recommendation to create a new sustainability position to report to the City Manager. I would advocate for further recommendations on solar incentives (residential and business) via tax exemptions or subsidized loans, further investigation into small-scale hydro power, increased guidelines on sustainability standards for new construction, city commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2050 (example: Sierra Club's Ready for 100 initiative), increased focus on improving local food systems in partnership with 3 the Oshkosh Food Co-Op, converting abandoned industrial space to green space, building retrofit financial incentives similar to solar incentives, and green business friendly incentives to attract new business to the city. There are so many opportunities that Oshkosh can take advantage of and run with to be a regional, or even national, leader in sustainability.
