HomeMy WebLinkAboutnewsletter DATE: January 22, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager SUBJECT: Weekly Newsletter 1. IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY: When Star Wars™ hit the movie theaters in 1977, it instantly became a box office smash, especially with children. Kids wanting to bring the action home from the theater with them could find their favorite heroes, villains, creatures, and spaceships in miniature size on the toy shelves. From 1978 to 1985, Kenner Toys manufactured hundreds of action figures, vehicles, and playsets featured in the movies Star Wars™, The Empire Strikes Back™, and Return of the Jedi™. These toys today are as iconic as the movies themselves. On view, the largest public display of these original Kenner™ Star Wars™ toys ever in Wisconsin will be at the Oshkosh Public Museum. If you grew up loving Star Wars™ or your kid wishes they were a Jedi, visit the Oshkosh Public Museum for The Nostalgia Awakens, January 24 through June 20, 2021. Reservations required! Reserve and prepay for the date and time that works for you, allowing you easy check-in when you arrive and safety precautions for the ongoing pandemic. Visit http://www.oshkoshmuseum.org/oshkoshpublicmuseum/ for tickets. 2. KUDOS TO THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE: Congratulations to Property Appraiser Katrina Malson, who has recently been recognized by WAAO, Wisconsin Association of Assessing Officers, as Chairperson of the Year for her work on the association’s Education and Training Committee. The award was given in honor of Katrina’s 2019-2020 work organizing education and training courses for WAAO members across the state. Congratulations to Assessment Technician Terry Moe, who recently achieved a Property Appraiser certification after successfully passing the Wisconsin Assessor Certification program’s Property Appraiser certification exam. The Property Appraiser certification authorizes the certified individual to perform real and personal property appraisal for assessment purposes and also to give testimony before the municipal Board of Review. Achieving this level of certification insures that Terry possesses the knowledge required by statute in order to insure quality property assessments, and therefore greater equity in property taxation. 3. OSHKOSH MEDIA AND LWV TEAM UP FOR VIRTUAL FORUMS: Oshkosh Media and the League of Women Voters of Winnebago County wrote a new chapter in their partnership last Thursday night. For the first time ever, LWV held candidate forums in a virtual format. Candidates for Oshkosh Mayor and Oshkosh Common Council took part in virtual forums on the LWV Zoom platform and Oshkosh Media carried the event live. The community was able to watch and listen live on GovTV, Oshkosh Media’s live stream, and live on the radio on Oshkosh FM 101.9. Oshkosh Media handled technical operations behind the scenes while LWV moderated the event. To watch the forums, go to OshkoshMedia.org or check out the Oshkosh Media YouTube channel. Replays of the forums will also air on GovTV periodically up until Election Day on Tuesday, February 16th. For more information, contact Jake Timm in Media Services at 236–5261. 4.
