Re: Segmented Grounds
Date: August 10, 2004
Regarding the standard industry practice of utilizing metre than one ground
in a s..conduc:tor cable, Service Wire Co. follows requirements established
In UL 1277 (Power and Control Tray Cables) and the 2002 NEe for ground
wire sizing. It has long been industry standard to "segment" grounds to
balance the twisting of grounds and allow the ground:!I to fit between the
conductors of the cable.
Per UL 1277: Grounding: "Ground wires may be In one or many
locations (segmented)".
Per 2002 NEe: 250-118: "The equipment grounding eonductor
run with or enclosing the circuit conductors shall be one S2C
more or a combination of the following:
(1) A ~r or other corroslon.....iatant conductor...
....-
{NoIe: IJnder1I1H1 added by ServIce Wh Co.1
The requirement for grounding conductors is for a minimum Cin:ul.,..ftIIU
&Ii. As long as the total ground circular mil area equals or eKceeds the
requirement the ground can be In one or more than one location.
Therefore~ as can be seen, when the NEC specifIeS a minimum ground
size for use In parallel cables. This muse be considered as a total circular
mil area for the ground enclosed within one cable.
As a tong-used Industry example of the practice of -.aegmented- grounds.
consider a grounded 16KV single. The grounding for this conductor is achieved
by using Individual $trands whose total cross-sectIOn equates to a necessary
ground level. This Is no dlffetent than using muttlple "pieces- of bare copper to
equate to a total cross--sectlon for a cable grounding requirement.
In the specific example In question. a parallel Installation of 8 350 KCMIL 3
Conductor Type TC cable requiring a #2 ground needs 66,360 circular mils
(which is the cross-sectional area of a #2 AWG ground). In the
construction in question, Service Wire Co. uses 3 #6 grounds (26,240
circular mils each) with a total of 78.720 Circular Mils. This Is, therefore,
larger than the specified required ground size per customer specifications
for this cable. Therefore. the use of three grounds by ServI~ Wire Co.
results in a ground slightly larger than required.

In addition, a question has been posed regarding the apparent discrepancy
between NEe 250.122 (rmnlmum ground size for parallel cabtes used on
circuits) and NEe 310.4. To clartfy. NEe 310.4 relates to grounded
conductors (and their minimum size), not to grounds used in a cable. It
does not apply In the specific example In question (though it does apply to
the grounded conductors. which are size 350 KCMIL in this Instance).

COPELADDER
By specifying the NEMA class designation, you will use the
simplest, clearest, and most complete method of specification
available and automatically incorporate support span in feet,
working {allowable} load in pounds per linear foot, a safety factor
of 1.5, a concentrated load if present; and, all other design,
manufacturing and test standards including electrical continuity.
All you need to do is add the desired load depth, rung spacing,
radius of fittings, metal and finish. You may add accessory
information pursuant to your project. Here is a typical specifica-
tion for an outdoor tray system where the working (allowable)
load has been determined to be approximately 75 pounds per
foot on support spans of 12'.
SPECIFICATION ALUMINUM COPE LADDER SYSTEM
Cable ladder shall be manufactured by a company regularly
engaged in the manufacture of metal cable trays and shall be a
member of NEMA. Trays shall conform to NEMA Metal Cable Tray
Standard Publication VE-1 (latest issue).
1. Cable ladder shall be NEMA Classification 12B of the widths
indicated.
2. Material shall be aluminum alloy with side rails and rungs
of 6063.
3. Finish shall be natural.
4. Inside load depth to be NEMA Standard 3".
5. Fittings shall be 12" radius for control cables and 24" radius
for power cables. (This must be commensurate with the cable
manufacturers' recommended minimum bending radius.)
6. All top level trays in stacks, and single runs to have raised
peaked, aluminum ventilated covers with heavy duty hold
down clamps every 3'-0".
7. Install expansion connectors, expansion guides, and hold
down clamps per NEMA Standard VE-1 .
8. Where slopes or horizontal bends of trays are not at the
Standard NEMA angles, use adjustable connectors. If the
angle is too great for cable bending radius, use combina-
tions of fitting and adjustable connectors.
9. Separate all cables of different volt ages in the same tray
using the manufacturer's standard barriers and barrier hold
down system.
10. The Cable ladder system will be used as an equipment

Re: American International Machinery
Carton Folding Machine - Electrical review
@ Stratograph Plant, 3465 Moser St., Oshkosh, WI 54901-1262
A&O Project No. 050025
Dear Mr. Benner:
This is the final report on the electrical evaluation of the carton folding machine, manufactured
by American International Machinery, Inc that has been installed at the Stratograph Plant, 3465
Moser St., Oshkosh, VVI. Since the International Machinery, Inc. equipment is not
listed/labeled by one of the testing laboratories recognized by the State of VVisconsin, the city
of Oshkosh requires that the equipment be evaluated to applicable American Nationals
Standards (ANSI), National Electrical Code (NEC), State ofVVisconsin COMM 16 code
requirements.
I have evaluated the Firing Circuits, Inc equipment with respect to the applicable National
Fire Protection Agency, NFPA 79, "Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery" (2002
Edition), NEC (2002 edition) and COMM 16 (June 2003) code requirements.
The evaluation was performed at the Stratograph Plant, 3465 Moser St., Oshkosh, VVI. The
equipment is located in production area of the plant.
This evaluation is only for the electrical construction of the carton folding machine and does
not include glue machinery add-ons by the Owner.
The carton folding machine is manufactured by American International Machinery, Inc. This
review is limited to the carton folding machinery and related wiring. The panelboards and
circuitry providing electrical power to this equipment since these facilities are either UL

listed equipment or are required to comply with the National Electrical Code, State and Local
Electrical codes.
The Electrical Drawings and Installation, Operating & Maintenance Manual ofthe equipment
were reviewed. It is my opinion that this information is adequate for a qualified person to
understand the operation of the equipment.
The objective of this evaluation is to perform an on-site review of the electrical equipment in
order to gather construction and operating data concerning its safety. Although compliance
with all of the requirements of the stated references can not be verified by nondestructive
methods; electrical authorities may consider favorable results of the evaluation by an
independent (i.e. not affiliated with the manufacturer, the Owner/tenant of the occupancy, or
the electrical and/or general contractor working on the installation) third party to be indicative
of a satisfactory level of design and construction safety.
This third party evaluation method is more practical when conditions of frequent design
improvements or low production volume make listing by a nationally recognized testing
laboratory impractical.
Many requirements of the safety standards and electrical codes are intended to prevent fire and
shock hazards from occurring during normal operating conditions and to protect against
abnormal conditions that may occur. Most of the performance tests that are conducted prior to
the listing of equipment are potentially destructive and cannot reasonably be conducted on
equipment that is later to be used in its intended applications. Therefore, an attempt has been
made to evaluate this equipment in terms of the predicted results of such tests without actually
conducting the tests and to verify the suitability of the equipment to the application.
The elements used in the evaluation include, but are not limited to: overall electrical design
and construction, suitability of materials and components, types and ratings of overcurrent and
overload protections, interlocks and controls, proper ventilation, available energy, integrity of
raceways and enclosures, wiring methods, grounding and the use ofUL recognized or listed
components.
The equipment as originally provided by the manufacturer DID NOT comply with the electrical
construction requirements of the applicable standards. The portions ofthe standard that required
modifications of the equipment to be in compliance with the stated references are noted on the
attachment to this report and have been completed. The Check List and Test Reports conducted
by Electrical Testing Services are attached. The Check List has corresponding paragraph
numbers to NFP A 79 "Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery". Each paragraph indicates
whether this machine complies, does not comply or the paragraph is not applicable to this
machine. It is our opinion that the carton forming machine is in compliance with NFP A 79
standards and will be safe for operation by trained personnel in the City of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
If you have any questions or comments, please call me at 608-821-8500.
