December 2020
1. A total of 73 children had a magical holiday experience when they attended Virtual Santa
Storytime on Dec. 2. The program was held via Zoom and in addition to stories, songs and
general merriment, families had the opportunity to schedule an individual “meet ‘n’ greet”
with Santa. One parent who contacted the library after the program wrote, “It was so very
special for my boys and you did such a nice job!”
2. Patrons have been enthusiastic about the opportunity to carry out their library items, with
about 75 percent currently choosing that pickup option over curbside service. Staff report
that although they can’t browse at this time, some patrons are thrilled to be able to come
inside the library building for materials. One patron summed up her feelings on Facebook:
“I walked into the library today! As in I opened the door and got to go inside to pick up my
books and DVD, I seriously almost started bawling on the beautiful library. They have a
decorated Christmas tree!
You can’t browse and there are no meetings or movies or group activities, but the staff is
there and they were as nice as ever. My goodness I miss our incredible library and am
grateful for books and not having to call and schedule a time and then feel stressed when
I’m running late.”
3. Families ordering Book Bundles get a bonus during December – kits to make holiday
ornaments at home. The Children’s Department typically does several DIY ornament
programs in the library during the holidays, so these supplies were offered as kits for
families to make the ornaments at home. Take-home kits encourage creativity and have
been welcomed as a way for patrons to enjoy doing an activity together.
