Do you have any other previous experience, As a member of the re:TH!NK Youth Coalition (2013-
special qualifications or technical training, 2017) I volunteered through many cigarette butt pickups
that would be relevant to the position that within City of Oshkosh parks. This volunteer work
you are interested in? cumulated in successfully advocating for a tobacco -free
parks rule which included informing the public about the
initiative, presenting to the City Council, and presenting to
the Advisory Parks Board. The summer of 2018 I interned
with the Winnebago County Health Department, and
although not parks specific work, the experience gave me a
foundational understanding of how local government
works. As a political science major and planned minor in
community building and social change I have taken classes
with the goal of gaining skills and knowledge about
community development. Classes taken so far: Community
Building and Social Change: Principles and Perspectives
which included topics such as increasing community
participation, community capacity building, and evaluating
local conditions; Foundations of Development Studies
which focused on the origins and impacts of development
policy. Classes that I will be taking while on the Parks
Advisory Board that I believe will help me in my role are
Public Policy Analysis, Microeconomics, and Community
Building and Social Change: Planning Community
Initiatives (includes implementing an initiative with an
Atlanta based organization). Additionally, I've had the
unique opportunity to spend extended periods of time in
three different countries (US; 2 months in China in 2016; 8
months in Ecuador 2017-2018) and in three US states (WI;
GA for school; CA for three months summer of 2019)
which means I've been able to see the function and impact
of parks and public spaces within many different contexts.
This allows me to consider multiple perspectives in any
situation.
Please write a concise statement which If selected to fill the position of Alternate I on the
describes why you wish to serve on the Advisory Parks Board I will work towards bettering the
above Board/Commission. community by providing the youth perspective and being
an approachable member for younger community residents.
Additionally, this opportunity will be an early step in
gaining the experience and knowledge necessary to do
more for my community in the future. Also, the parks and
public spaces within the city are one of the main ways I
have felt connected to Oshkosh and as a member of the
Advisory Parks Board, I will continually work to ensure
others are able to feel the same connection which is
especially crucial during current COVID times.
