William D.Hatfield Award Presentation
The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is a not-for-profit technical and educational
organization of 35,000 individual members and 75 affiliated Member Associations representing
water quality professionals around the world. Since 1928, WEF and its members have protected
public health and the environment. As a global water sector leader, their mission is to connect
water professionals; enrich the expertise of water professionals; increase the awareness of the
impact and value of water; and provide a platform for water sector innovation.
CSWEA is a WEF Member Association serving Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin offering
multiple opportunities for the exchange of water quality knowledge and experience among its
members and the public and to foster a greater awareness of water quality achievements and
challenges.
The William D. Hatfield Award is presented to operators of wastewater treatment plans for
outstanding performance and professionalism. The award was established in honor of Dr.
William D. Hatfield, Superintendent of the Decatur, IL Sanitary District, who was President of
the CSWEA in 1944 — 1946 and served as President of the Federation of Sewage and Industrial
Wastes Associations (previous name of WEF) in 1958 — 1959. From 1946 to 1954, this was a
CSWEA award presented to recognize the best annual treatment plant operating report and now
is awarded in recognition of outstanding professional service in both facility operations and
public education.
