HomeMy WebLinkAbout11.13newsletter DATE: November 13, 2020 TO: Honorable Mayor and Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager SUBJECT: Weekly Newsletter 1. OSHKOSH MEDIA COVERS LOCAL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY: Each year on November 11, the country honors military veterans who serve and have served our country. The Oshkosh Patriotic Council held its annual Veterans Day ceremony this past Wednesday on the front steps of the Winnebago County Courthouse, and Oshkosh Media was there to capture the moment. Representatives from Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS Post 7, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17 spoke at the event. The ceremony ended with military honors led by the United Veterans Honor Guard, and the playing of “Taps” by a member of the VFW Band. Video of the full ceremony is available on the Oshkosh Media website and Oshkosh Media YouTube channel, click this link to watch now: https://youtu.be/tHGOYDSk0gk. You can also see the full ceremony on Gov TV, check out the schedule on OshkoshMedia.org for replay times. 2. MUSEUM ORAL HISTORIES A STATE-WIDE RESOURCE: Oral histories conducted by the Oshkosh Public Museum are now available online through the Listening to War: Wisconsin’s Wartime Oral Histories project from Recollection Wisconsin! By Spring 2021, the Oshkosh Public Museum’s content will also be discoverable in the recollectionwisconsin.org portal and the Digital Public Library of America. 3. ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY: The City of Oshkosh United Way campaign is currently underway and will run through November 30. In order to make this the most successful campaign ever, please consider donating. Last year, 36 city employees donated to the United Way by pledging online, raising a little over $5,500! Rather than focusing on dollar amounts in 2020, the Oshkosh Area United Way (OAUW) would like to raise awareness. Therefore, our goal for 2020 is to raise awareness by increasing the number of participants by 50%. That’s an increase of only 18 employees! Remember, the gifts you make help people in our community directly! For your convenience all pledging is done online. You can choose automatic payroll deductions throughout the year or a one-time contribution amount. Visit the City’s United Way pledge page at http://www.oshkoshunitedway.org/city. As an added incentive donors may be eligible for entry in the 2020 Chevy Spark give-away! See Sweepstakes Rules at: https://www.oshkoshunitedway.org/sweepstakes/. 4. GREAT READS OF 2020: The annual review of the year’s best books features titles selected by Information Services librarians Michael McArthur and Justine Elliott premiered on the Oshkosh Public Library’s YouTube Channel on Friday. The pair highlights some of their favorites during the video program, which is certainly “Must See TV” for avid readers. A complete list of the Great Reads of 2020 is available on the library’s website, on the YouTube channel and as a handout for distribution to readers using our curbside services. Great Reads will also air in its entirety on Oshkosh Media, Nov. 14 – Dec. 31. Watch the program, place your holds and start reading! 5.
