Ms. Richey called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. PRESENT: Heidi Basford-Kerkhof; Ron Duerkop; Xandy Kloeckl; Julie Maslowski; Judy Richey; Lurton Blassingame; Julie Kiefer; Deb Allison-Aasby EXCUSED: Sue Ashton STAFF: Jean Wollerman, Senior Services Manager; Bobbie Luft, Office Assistant B.) APPROVAL OF MINUTES: June 4, 2019 minutes approved as written. Mr. Blassingame moved to accept the minutes as written, Mr. Duerkop seconded. Motion carried to accept the minutes as written. D.) Citizens Statements- Erin Roberts, Winnebago County Health Department announced a program to be held on August 27; Building a Better You, UWFV-Midway Rd in Menasha, there will be vendors and demonstrations, last year 200 participants attended and they have hopes to exceed that this year. To register go to Findingbalancetogether.org Mr. Blassingame questioned if there was anyone that would show seniors how to get up if they should fall. Mrs. Roberts stated there is a program called, Stay Active Be Confident and she would go to the home and discuss falls, exercise and hazards in the home. Kyle King, Mercy Geriatric Psych, 15 beds will be complete soon with a dedicated group room. In May the unit only had 6 beds because of construction and all 6 beds were occupied. E.) NEW BUSINESS: a. Mr. Duerkop questioned the number people participating in the continuing education. Mrs. Kiefer stated there are 292 enrolled. She stated the number ranges from 250 to 300. Mrs. Maslowski questioned the age to register for continuing education. Mrs. Kiefer stated 50 and over. Ms. Richey questioned if guests were welcome. Mrs. Kiefer stated guests were welcome, however there may be an upcharge. if there was enough men, at least 50 they could do one. Mr. Blassingame encourage her to reach out to men as they do women to see if there would be enough. b. Ms. Richey stated that if there are any changes to the contact list of Committee on Aging members, to contact Bobbie after the meeting. Mr. Blassingame questioned if there were going to be alternates. Mrs. Allison-Aasby stated it is still pending discussion. F.) OLD BUSINESS: a) Strengthen our Partnership with Neighborhood Assoc. and Other Partners-Lurton Blassingame- Mr. Blassingame explained he attended the Neighborhood Association Meeting and mentioned the wellness plus collaboration classes; Food Truck Friday dates; Active Minds and library delivery to homes. He stated he shares what the committee learns to the neighborhood associations. Mr. Duerkop questioned how many attend the neighborhood meetings. Mr. Blassingame replied approximately 12 to 13 people. ĬΜ Affordable Transportation and Delivery Services for Seniors-Judy Richey- No Report c) Create Community Design & Policy that supports an Age Friendly community-Jean Wollerman- Mrs. Basford-Kerkhof reported that she and Mrs. Wollerman discussed creating a survey regarding how the City meets the needs of Oshkosh. She stated they had contacted the public works department and was told that snow removal is a problem for some seniors, sometimes the homeowner is billed over $100 to have the City do the snow removal. It was noted that a potential solution to the snow removal problem would be to collaborate with the Oshkosh School District to see if students could remove snow for a phy ed credit. She asked the committee members how they would like them to proceed with this. Mr. Blassingame stated they needed to find out where the need in the community was for this and how many residents have the need. Mrs. Allison-Aasby stated there is a school in Oshkosh that has a Community Service class for grades 9-12. d) Improve Communication and Visibility of Available Services to Seniors-Ron Duerkop- see attachment B G.) OTHER BUSINESS: a. Discussion and information pertaining to scams targeting senior citizens- Ms. Richey explained the romance scam and stated Wisconsin is #3 in the country for being targeted for scams. Mr. Duerkop stated that the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reports that Seniors between the ages 70-79 who fell for scams in 2018 had a median loss of more than $700, consumers aged 80 and over lost $1,700four times more money than victims in their twenties . He provided the consumer hotline 1 800 422 7128. He stated there is a Money Smart for Older Adults book located in the Resource Room at the Seniors Center regarding scams. See attachment C Ms. Richey explained another scam was reading obituaries and contacting spouse stating there is money due to the survivor or the deceased had owed money, this is a way to get information. High School, registrations begins at 8 am. H.) ADJOURNMENT: Mrs. Maslowski moved to adjourn at 8:45am, Mr. Blassingame seconded, motion carried to adjourn at 8:45 am.
