MEMO TO THE MUSEUM BOARD
August 21, 2020
To the Board,
Attached is the draft agenda for September 3 and the proposed budgets for trusts and funds, including
the Kitz bequest and Membership Fund. As I mentioned in the last memo, it was a challenge making
this work because we are committed to keeping the trusts and funds strong. I commend Theresa Books
for her outstanding work on this task.
Excluding Durow and Membership, we only budgeted a portion of estimated income for trusts and
funds. Part of this is because of minimal earnings, but also because we are drawing on other resources,
and that should enable the funds to grow a bit.
In regard to the Membership Fund, due to various delays and the closure, you will see costs approved
last autumn carried forward into the 2021 budget. This includes the education and Titanic part-time
staff. In regard to education, we are starting to get back on track with the Oshkosh Area School District,
but schools are dealing with other priorities. I extend my thanks to Superintendent Vicki Cartwright
for helping coordinate this important task, as promoting the Museum as a field trip destination is high
on our list of priorities. In regard to Titanic, Tammy Malewski intends to continue seeking
sponsorship funds for some of the remaining balance associated with Titanic, but she does so knowing
it will be difficult due to the pandemic/economy and the needs of all nonprofits seeking support. As
soon as we have a final approved design for the Sporting & Recreation exhibition, which I anticipate
will happen at the October meeting, I will switch my emphasis to writing requests to help with our
portion of that project.
I realize that I overlooked telling the Board about a new feature that benefits the Endowment that we
have programmed into the point of sale system. Every visitor is asked if they’d like to “round up”
their admission or purchase, with the round-up amount going to the Endowment. They can round up
by cents or dollars. Thus far every visitor has done this and the point of sale system totals their round
up amount so those funds can be accounted for. Taken collectively and over the long term, the
individual round up dollars and cents will have a positive impact on the Endowment. I believe the
Endowment will grow just as our collections have grown: little by little and by thousands of donors.
General citizen support is a hallmark of a public museum.
The autumn newsletter is completed and at the printer. Daniel Fiser and Ms. Malewski work hard on
each issue, knowing that The Muse is the primary way we communicate with our Members and
donors, as well as a key way we tell stories about the community, its people, our collections, and our
mission. This issue profiles several superb pieces that could rightly be called highpoints of the
collection. I am always impressed with each issue and it continues to grow in many ways.
There is nothing of note for the miscellaneous paragraph, other than we are beginning our annual
battle with mice, which usually starts in late summer. The foundation repair will help immensely in
this effort.
That ends the week and I hope you have a pleasant weekend.

Oshkosh Public Library Highlights
August 2020
1. The library partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau in July and August to offer in-person
assistance with filling out the 2020 Census. Census Bureau staff stationed in the library’s
parking lot assisted 112 people. The Census Bureau liaison was extremely pleased with the
results and applauded this effort to bring Oshkosh closer to achieving a complete count.
2. Community Engagement Librarian Sandy Toland received an Outstanding Service Award from
the City of Oshkosh recently. During a presentation in William Waters Plaza, City Manager Mark
Rohloff recognized the valuable research that Sandy has done during the pandemic in support of
the Emergency Operations Center. Having a professional librarian embedded at the EOC has
helped city leadership stay informed throughout the COVID-19 health emergency, with Sandy’s
regular reports documenting developments on local, state, national and global levels. This type
of activity gets the library out where service is needed and helps to build relationships, all in
support of the greater Oshkosh community.
3. The outdoor drop box at Evergreen is open to accept returns of library materials for the first
time since mid-March. Materials returned to Evergreen will be quarantined for four days, in line
with safety guidelines. At this time, library services at Evergreen (pickup of holds) continue to be
suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 health emergency.
4. OPL patrons now have an online option to schedule an appointment to use a library computer,
pick up materials curbside, print and fax, get a document notarized or charge a device. The
Calendly platform is easy to use and offers convenient access to OPL services for those who
prefer digital scheduling.
5. Interlibrary Loan is available again, after being suspended due to the pandemic. Patrons can
once again request items not owned by libraries in the Winnefox system by filling out an online
form or calling 236-5205.
6. Patrons looking for books, DVDs and other materials that are on the shelves, ready for checkout,
should catch Shelf Selected, a new Facebook Live feature started by Teen Librarian Maggie
Mueller. Every Wednesday at 5 p.m., Shelf Selected showcases new items that patrons normally
would find while browsing the shelves. The Facebook Live format allows viewers to engage with
library staff in real time and get questions answered about materials that interest them.
