The library has settled into a routine with our contactless curbside pickup service and the response from the community has been enthusiastic! Since starting the service on April 24, OPL has circulated about 10,000 items from our collection and staff have made more than 2,800 “trips to the curb” to bring patrons the materials they desire. 2. To help get the word out about curbside pickup and how it works, the library partnered with Oshkosh Media to create a video. In the video, Assistant Director for Public Services Ruth Percey takes viewers through the process for requesting materials and receiving them curbside. Many thanks to Oshkosh Media for creating an easy-to-follow video guide to this new library service! Find the video on Oshkosh Media’s YouTube channel. 3. OPL is getting ready to launch our 2020 Summer Reading Challenge. And while this summer will look different than years past, participants of all ages will still have opportunities to achieve reading goals and engage in activities that inspire curiosity and facilitate learning. Using the platform Beanstack, librarians developed an interactive digital program that can be accessed on a computer, tablet, laptop or smartphone. Individuals, families and groups can easily register, track and reach their goals. If participating digitally isn’t an option, readers can use a traditional paper log to mark their progress. 4. The library is once again partnering with the Winnebago Area Literacy Council, Zaronis and House of Heroes Comics + Games for the Mark Gruenwald Comic Book Creation Challenge. Art kits are being distributed at Zaronis and House of Heroes, as well as other locations throughout the community. Individuals and teams are challenged to create an original comic book, with extra points awarded this year for comics honoring essential workers. Participants can register on the library website or download a registration form. 5. OPL has taken book clubs for a wide range of ages online to engage readers in lively conversations about what they’re reading. The Tween Book Club, for ages 9-11, will have its first online meeting via Zoom on June 5. Teen Book Club also meets the first Friday of the month on Zoom and the Anytime Book Club for adults happens on the third Tuesday of the month on Facebook Live. 6. What are the folks at OPL reading? That is a continuing source of fascination among readers in our community. Our Staff Picks feature is the most consistently read item in our monthly eNewsletter. Book Thirsty had its debut recently on YouTube, with staff recommending follow- up reads to your favorite TV shows or movies. And #currentlyreading showcases OPL staff and what they’re reading on Instagram.
