HomeMy WebLinkAbout05.22.20 Newsletter DATE: May 22, 2020 TO: Honorable Mayor and Common Council FROM: Mark Rohloff, City Manager SUBJECT: Weekly Newsletter 1. DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT: Each year, the Water Utility is required to provide a Drinking Water Quality Report to the entire city. This report provides information to our customers about the regulation of drinking water, regulatory standards, the source and treatment of the water supply, health information, sources of potential contaminants, and monitoring data summarizing water quality data. A notice stating the availability of the report will be included with all of the June utility bills. A paper copy may be requested by calling (920)236-5325. Copies are also available outside of Rooms 106 and 301 at City Hall and at the Oshkosh Public Library. A copy of the report can also be found at the link below: https://www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/PublicWorks/Documents/CCR-2019.pdf The results for 2019 were within the expected ranges from all previously-collected data. Much of the data in the report has been part of the drinking water quality testing program for years and the water utility has had an excellent record of meeting and exceeding all regulatory drinking water requirements. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Public Works Utility Operations Manager Steve Brand. 2. SPRING HAS SPRUNG! Spring is in the air and parks continue to see improvements despite COVID-19. Teichmiller Park projects such as batting cage construction and ball field restoration have been completed and will be ready for use once the turf establishes. Congress Tot Lot playground replacement has begun and should be completed in the next few weeks. This will be a great neighborhood enhancement in collaboration with the neighborhood association. 3. TIME TO PLAY BALL? As of May 20, the city began a phased opening of park facilities including the open use of athletic fields. Softball/baseball organizations have been contacted to complete revised Field Use Request Forms and submit them to the Parks Department by May 28 so that a revised field use schedule can be completed by the Department by June 5. The Department works with over a dozen user groups on using park ball fields. We have advised the user groups that June 15 will be the start of scheduled/reserved facility use by groups. Fields are available for open use until then. We have reminded the groups that current guidelines from health agencies still recommend no group gatherings outside of your household and social distancing of 6 feet, and similar recommendations are expected to continue through the summer. OSHKOSH SENIORS KEEPING IT TOGETHER: COVID-19 has really been tough on older people who are at higher risk for serious illness due to the virus. At the Oshkosh Seniors Center, we have been keeping in touch with participants via email, phone, social media, and virtual events. One request that has been frequently made is to help people get a mask. After some research, the Wisconsin Face Mask Warriors have come to the rescue! They have generously donated over 500 masks to the Oshkosh Seniors Center. We posted on our Facebook page, “Do you need a mask?” Within hours, seniors started to pick up masks available at the center’s front door. So far we’ve given hundreds of masks to community seniors. Here’s what our seniors have had to say:  “Thank you so much. You warm my heart!”  “Thank you, thank you so very much. You are a blessing to the community.”  “What a kind offer! Thank you so much!” Thank you to Wisconsin Face Mask Warriors. This group is receiving donations of 100% cotton fabric, 1/8 to 1/4 inch elastic, bias tape, and thread. In Oshkosh, you may drop donations off at 240 South Lark Street. If you have questions, email Christine at landcpayne2016@gmail.com. If you know a senior in need of a mask, have them call the Oshkosh Seniors Center at 920-232-5300 for assistance. The Center is asking everyone to reach out to older adults in our community during these uncertain times. Stay physically distant but find a way to socially connect with them! If you have any questions, please contact Jean Wollerman, Senior Services Manager, at (920) 232-5300. 5.
