Do you have any other previous experience, I am an experienced sustainability advocate and a
special qualifications or technical training, committed educator. I have developed knowledge of
that would be relevant to the position that sustainability best practices as a Sustainability Coordinator
you are interested in? and Lecturer through employment at the University of
Wisconsin- Oshkosh. Global awareness and systems-
thinking are at the core of my commitment to
sustainability. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has
developed a reputation as a national leader in the campus
sustainability movement, and I have been intimately
involved in all aspects of this initiative. As the
Sustainability Coordinator at UW Oshkosh since June
2014, I took a lead role in developing and writing the
second Campus Sustainability Plan(2015-2019), which
serves as a guiding document of measurable goals and
provides a framework to implement initiatives. To draft this
plan, I worked directly with campus stakeholders to ensure
that environmental stewardship was integrated, aligned
with and supported the overall goals and objectives of the
institution. This task went hand-in-hand with my yearly
review of campus data to report to AASHE in our STARS
report. As co-chair of the Campus Sustainability Council,
another body working to implement projects across
campus, I have established various recycling programs and
waste diversion projects that have reduced the campus'
environmental impact and saved the campus money by
reducing tipping fees. Over the past several years, I have
served as the primary planner for sustainability-themed
events and week-long programs geared towards engaging
students in sustainability at UW-Oshkosh, such as the Earth
Charter Community Summit, Earth Week, and Move Out.
As a Lecturer in the Biology department often teaching
introductory courses to non-majors, I know the importance
of making environmental issues interesting and accessible
for students in a variety of disciplines. I have been
fortunate to work with faculty across the disciplines to
generate ideas about how they can incorporate
sustainability into their courses as part of the new general
education program at UW Oshkosh, and have also
developed my own course work to reflect an
interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues through
the lens of sustainability. I was also a member of the team
that developed a sustainability literacy assessment tool for
all students enrolled in sustainability-focused and -themed
courses that are now a core component of general education
at UW Oshkosh. My experience teaching about
sustainability really grew when I was asked to teach two
introductory courses in the Environmental Studies program
at UW Oshkosh focused on sustainability. Through this
work, as well as numerous meetings and conferences, I
have made definitive efforts to deepen connections with
2
local and regional partners involved in sustainability
programs. In establishing recycling programs on campus, I
have connected with various waste management companies
in the Fox Valley and sought businesses interested in
assisting us with special projects to reduce our
environmental impact. In addition, I coordinated the
Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council Conference in
2015 at UW Oshkosh, which was attended by over 300
business leaders from across the state interested in
sustainability. I bring to this board the diverse experiences
and knowledge that a position in sustainability leadership
requires. I have been praised for building culture around
sustainability. I am recognized for living the values that I
teach and I promise that I will bring integrity to the
Sustainability Advisory Board.
Please write a concise statement which I have built many relationships with community partners

above Board/Commission. improve the sustainability aspects of our city. In my role as
the Campus Sustainability Coordinator and as a Biologist, I
know that data are everything. One of my main foci is
using the college campus as a microcosm for society and
using the"campus as a living, learning laboratory"model
to address sustainability challenges and opportunities. For
example, I use on-campus energy data in the classroom and
ask students to calculate energy savings after large campus
projects, such as lighting retrofits which are part of
performance contracts with campus business partners.
Bringing this kind of work into the classroom and assessing
programs on campus, and data generated by a campus, in
addition to experiential learning opportunities in the
community, maximizes impact and learning and produces
critical thinkers with real world experience that can think
globally and act locally. Extending this kind of work out to
the community can allow the SAB to use data to better
address issues within the city sustainably and adopt
recognized best practices to make Oshkosh a more healthy,
vibrant, diverse,resilient community.
